Auyeung now $2.5m poorer

Hongkong (Sept 8): The Government has recovered $2.5 million of the $6.1 million former policeman Auyeung Kwan is known to have made from corruption.

The $2.5 million was all that could be found of the $6 million Auyeung controlled in the names of his mother-in-law and step-daughter.

The Crown settled out of court in July for the $2.5 million from the two women.

The Legal Department will try to recover the balance from Auyeung, presently serving a four-year sentence for having assets disproportionate to his official income.

Wanted: Tax

Boston (Sept 7): Boston is planning to embarrass some of its prominent residents into paying their overdue property tax bills by splashing their pictures and tax bills on wanted posters in various public spots.

A city official agreed the move is harsh. But he said it would get the point across - that the city is serious about collecting an estimated US$50 million (about HK$250 million) owed in property taxes for the past three fiscal years.
