MTR commuters delayed by jammed compartment doors

Niki Law

Updated at 7.37pm:
About 100 Mass Transit Railway commuters had to get off a train when the doors to three of its compartments failed to open at Shekkipmei station on Tuesday morning.

In the latest incident of a series of MTR train failures, the doors of the Kwun Tong-line train experienced problems when it arrived at the station around 6.30am.

''The driver found that the doors of three of the eight carriages could not open and close smoothly,'' a spokesman for Mass Transit Railway Corporation said.

He added: ''Passengers were asked to leave the train when it arrived at Prince Edward station.''

After all the passengers had disembarked, the train was driven to the Kowloon Bay depot for inspection.

The spokesman said that the 100 passengers on the train had to spend an extra 10 minutes on their journey.

He explained that the MTRC has launched an investigation into the incident and would compile a report for the Transport Department.

The train delay on Tuesday morning followed a series of complaints about train breakdowns that have taken place during the past month.

Last week MTR services on the new Tseung Kwan O line - between Yau Tong and North Point stations - were suspended for 45 minutes after a train broke down because of a short-circuit.
