A SECURITY guard's discovery of a loose licence plate at a Kowloon Bay car park led to the retrieval of two stolen cars and the arrest of two men, the High Court heard yesterday.

Ho Kwok-wai, 24, and Leung Kok-lee, 26, have denied three counts of theft on July 7 and 8 last year.

In her opening address before Mr Justice Leong and a jury, Senior Crown Counsel Patty Lee said a security guard patrolling the Richland Garden car park at about 2 am on July 8, 1992, noticed the number plate of a Mercedes-Benz was loose.

He examined it and discovered that under it was another plate bearing a different number: CN 1.

He also spotted scratches on the lock of the driver's door, and reported the matter to the police.
