My firm (a US-based company) recently requested that staff observe one minute of silence at 9am today in memory of those that lost their lives in the World Trade Centre tragedy.

This is a good thing. One minute is not a lot to ask. I would be even more pleased if companies in the SAR (and elsewhere) would observe one minute of silence to remember countless other victims of war and terrorism across the globe.
Let us not forget, amid the frantic media attention surrounding the admittedly horrific events of September 11, that human lives are all of infinite value.
