Tung Chee-hwa last night pledged unstinting support for the war on terrorism, at a delayed memorial service marking the anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
About 1,300 people turned up to the commemoration at City Hall, organised by the American Chamber of Commerce. The memorial was postponed on Wednesday night due to the hoisting of the No 8 storm signal for Typhoon Hagupit.
The Chief Executive and United States Consul-General James Keith both vowed to continue the global fight against terrorism while remembering the 3,000 victims who lost their lives.
'Over the last year, we have stood squarely behind global efforts to prevent and eradicate terrorism, and we will continue to do so with the same firmness and determination, in whatever way we can,' said Mr Tung.
He said Hong Kong played a vital role in the fight against terrorist money laundering and helped implement United Nations resolutions that made it harder for terrorists to fund their activities.
Mr Keith said: 'Tonight we send a signal that the terrorists failed last year - we are not demoralised or divided.'
He said Hong Kong's support for the war against terrorism was essential as it was a world leader in the shipping industry, a financial centre and an important transportation hub.
