A hungry mainlander was jailed for seven years and four months yesterday after breaking into two border huts to steal food and drinks.

Wong Ting-wa, 30, admitted three charges of burglary in Siu Hum Tsuen, Lok Ma Chau.

His haul included a bottle of ketchup, a piece of pork, nine eggs, a clock, two cans of beer, four packets of lemon tea and fermented bean curd.

He also pleaded guilty to robbing a woman of $30 and threatening her with a pair of scissors in Lok Ma Chau on May 2.

Deputy Judge Derek Pang Wai-cheong, in the Court of First Instance, said a jail term was appropriate, although stealing food was a petty crime.

He took into account the fact that Wong had previously sneaked into Hong Kong at least three times since 1997 and had been jailed for burglary and theft.
