The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has crafted a stunning festival of innovative, contemporary theatre which starts in October. The theme is the fusion of East and West. The festival opens with the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre's 25th anniversary production Love In A Fallen City, a modern take on Eileen Chang's novel. Australia's highly acclaimed Bangarra Dance Theatre presents Corroboree, a modern aboriginal dance of 'a feverish intensity'. Switzerland's Theatre Vidy-Lausanne whirls into town with Hashirigaki (above), cross-cultural theatre that blends traditional Japanese music with the writings of Gertrude Stein and the music of The Beach Boys. Taiwan's Cloud Gate Dance Theatre returns with Cursive, a follow-up to Moon Water. Tan Dun's multimedia opera The Gate fuses Peking opera, Shakespeare and video. There is also a wide variety of music: Russia's Balalaika Ensemble, a fusion of jazz and Indian 'raga' with the George Brooks Summit and the British rock percussionist Bill Bruford.
