After almost a year of stress, more than a dozen letters and $100,000 in legal bills, amateur golfer Kwek Bee Lin has quit her quest to hold Discovery Bay Golf Club accountable for alleged handicapping irregularities.

Motivated by what she said was a desire to promote fair competition, Mrs Kwek, 44, of the Peak, filed a complaint about the club's handicapping system after finishing second in the Anniversary Cup competition in October.

She said the club based the winner's handicap on just two scorecards for the six months before the competition even though that person played the course several times a week.

After an unsatisfactory response from the club, Mrs Kwek hired lawyers and filed a complaint with the United States Golf Association.

The US association sets the rules that the Discovery Bay club follows.

The US association passed the complaint - that the club failed to adequately monitor handicaps and failed to disclose members' scoring records - to the Hong Kong Golf Association.
