IT'S entertaining to criticise fashion from the security of your living room, eating pizza in your heirloom sweat-suit.

Those outrageous outfits from Paris, you groan, as you switch TV channels. And those leggy, cellulite-free sirens. What do they have in common with reality. When was the last time you ran into anyone, executing hair-pin turns in your face, in a Gianni Versace checker-board suit, striped stockings and lace-up granny boots? Truce, waves Belinda Kwan. Change the way you look at runway fashion photos.

What is bought for Hong Kong - or what sells - isn't what parades across CNN, assures the senior manager of Gianni Versace boutiques.

''When you see those runway shows from Paris, you've got to remember, designers want to shock. He jazzes things up for the shows. It gets the camera.

''No one actually wears the suit with those stockings or accessories.'' Look at those photos critically. ''Take away the feathers and flowers. What Versace is selling is a basic suit. It's really versatile, but you have to look closely,'' she adds, waving a photo of a black and white suit from his autumn/winter 1993 collection.

The body-hugging suit is also designed to be worn as separates. ''Adding a chiffon skirt or tights or leggings are merely suggestions,'' Kwan continues. As for the models in the Versace advertisement - wild and outlandish - Kwan smiles.
