A 45-year-old man was jailed yesterday after he admitted being in possession of 105 counterfeit $50 banknotes and 94 fake $10 coins. District Court Judge Wesley Wong Wing-fai told Lai Siu-cheung, 45, that he had disrupted the economy and cheated the recipients of the forged banknotes. He jailed Lai for 3.5 years. The judge adopted a starting point of four years for each of five charges and gave the defendant the usual one-third discount for his guilty plea. He ordered part of the sentence to be run consecutively. Lai, who has a six-year-old son, admitted two charges of passing counterfeit notes and coins and three of having custody of fake notes and coins with intent. All the offences took place on July 2.
