A 21-year-old man driving a stolen car died early yesterday after the vehicle crashed as he was chased by its owner. The 36-year-old owner of the stolen grey Honda spotted his car, which had been stolen about a month ago, parked near a restaurant in Fan Kam Road near Ta Shek Wu, shortly after 3am. The car had been fitted with false licence plates. The owner contacted a friend and went with him in his car to keep watch on the stolen vehicle, while reporting the incident to police on his mobile phone. But before police could arrive, the owner and his friend saw two men get in the stolen car and drive off towards Fan Ling. They gave chase. After a 1.8km chase, the stolen car collided with another vehicle and crashed into a tree. The driver was freed from the car by firemen but certified dead at Northern District Hospital. His passenger, 22, was admitted in serious condition. Police were still unable to take a statement from him late last night.
