Where? In the historic neighbourhood of Yaletown, Vancouver, home to film companies and dotcoms.

It is a heritage hotel? Far from it. Although it fits in with its historic environs, the seven-storey Opus is a spanking new construction made out of granite, glass, steel and brick.

When did it open? September 16.

So it's quite literally the latest place to be seen? Indeed. Located close to Vancouver's most cosmopolitan restaurants, clubs, spas, art galleries and one-off boutiques, it is also within walking distance of the inner harbour and the city's business district.

What's the decor like? Unpredictable. The public spaces feature a cornucopia of contemporary, mid-century and classic furniture styles including stools by Philippe Starck, cocktail tables by Charles and Ray Eames and gilded Louis XV chairs.

Eclectic, then? Each of the 78 rooms and 19 suites is decorated in one of five different styles, ranging from frill-free functional to mix-and-match modern.

Which rooms are best? For peace of mind, book one of the courtyard rooms, which overlook a third-floor Zen garden, complete with a red-leafed Japanese maple tree.
