No Forbes CEO Summit would be complete without a keynote speech from the chief executive of the Forbes empire himself, Steve Forbes. Mr Forbes, who honed his oratory skills in two presidential campaigns in unsuccessful runs for the Republican Party nomination, brings to the podium a sharp wit and a no-holds-barred take on global issues. The key to his campaign platform was a flat tax, medical savings accounts, a new social savings system for working Americans, parental choice for schools, term limits, and a strong national defence. His high-profile candidacy apart, Mr Forbes is well-known for his role as editor-in-chief of Forbes magazine. He writes a regular editorial in the monthly business periodical under the heading 'Fact and Comment'. His thoughts span a wide range of issues. These include the inspired, from worries about smallpox and the road map for economic recovery, to the mundane, attacking proposals for a US dollar coin on the basis that the currency would be too heavy. Forbes magazine is one of the leading business publications in the United States, with a circulation of 850,000. Forbes and Forbes Global together reach a worldwide audience of almost five million readers. Mr Forbes is also chairman of the company's American Heritage division, publisher of American Heritage magazine and two quarterlies, American Legacy and American Heritage of Invention & Technology. Mr Forbes serves on the board of trustees of Princeton University as well as on numerous other boards. Born in Morristown, New Jersey in 1947, he attended Princeton University and graduated in 1970 with a bachelor's degree in history. As an undergraduate, Mr Forbes helped to launch a campus business magazine, Business Today , which today is the nation's largest magazine for students published by students. It has a circulation of 200,000. He is worth at least US$439 million, according to Fortune magazine, and is heir to an estimated US$1.4 billion. He owns an island in Fiji, a Boeing 727, a chateau in France, and a major league yacht. Recently, Mr Forbes published a book titled Birth Of Freedom , a work that lays out his social and political values in detail.
