Viet camp death unlawful

A CORONER'S jury yesterday returned a verdict of death by unlawful killing in the case of a Vietnamese camp inmate who died after a fight.

Coroner Rodney Venning heard that Nguyen Van Lay, 30, died at the Prince of Wales Hospital on January 3 last year after a fight with another inmate over a missing electric fan.

Forensic pathologist Dr William Li Chai said Nguyen died of a stab wound to the chest.

The court heard Nguyen fought Le Van Quang at the Whitehead Detention Centre. Both men were armed with knives.

Nguyen was stabbed twice by Le.

Le was found not guilty of murder by reason of self-defence on January 12 this year after a nine-day trial in the High Court.

John Halley acted as coroner's officer at yesterday's hearing.
