CHEANG Oi-kuan sees Hong Kong in a new light, after visiting Thailand recently. She realises the many advantages enjoyed by Hong Kong people after her trip abroad as one of the winners of the ''Destination Hong Kong 1992/93'' project competition.
Oi-kuan was one of six students who were taken to Bangkok as their prize for writing the best essays on how to attract overseas visitors to Hong Kong. The competition was open to all Secondary 3 to 5 students.
Three of the six winners came from Tak Ching Girls' Middle School, and the other three from Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Yau Tze Tin Memorial College.
Accompanied by representatives from the two schools and American Express, the students flew to Bangkok on July 15 and spent three exciting nights at the Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok.
''My first impression of Bangkok wasn't that appealing, because I saw children performing in the streets to earn a living for their families,'' Oi-kuan said.
''I discovered they didn't have money to go to school. Then I realised how fortunate we Hong Kong students are to have an education.
