Classes will resume today at an Inner Mongolian school where 21 students were killed by a collapsed staircase on Monday, an official said yesterday.
About 1,500 students at Fengzhen Number 2 Middle School will return to classrooms designed to accommodate 800.
'What else can they do? They just have to go back,' a Fengzhen official said.
Education authorities declined to comment, saying classes would resume as soon as possible.
A new principal has been appointed after former principal Fan Qi and vice-principal Xing Zhiqiang were arrested.
Xinhua reported earlier that Fan had ignored warnings by a teacher that the stairwell where the youths died had no lighting. Students piled on each other as the handrail of the staircase bent outward four or five steps above the ground floor. Seven teenage boys and 14 girls suffocated.
