A waiter dumped by his girlfriend still loved her so much that he helped to pay off her credit card debts - using a credit card he stole from her. When she threatened to tell police, Ho Siu-wai imprisoned and assaulted Cheung Siu-wai, the District Court heard. Ho, 25, admitted stealing two cards from Ms Cheung's Sha Tin home and using one of them to buy a mobile phone that he resold for $2,500. He then gave $2,000 to her. Barrister Alice Lee, defending, told the court that Ho, who was unemployed, loved Ms Cheung and wanted to help her. Judge Judianna Barnes Wai-ling, said his chosen method of assistance was 'very strange'. 'On the face of it he's showing kindness to her but in fact he's stabbing her from behind [by incurring more credit debts],' Judge Barnes said. The court heard that Ho and Ms Cheung, 24, met in February last year. They started living together in June and in November moved to Sha Tin to live with her family. But after Ho lost his job in April, the relationship turned sour. The couple broke up in May, Ms Lee said. As well as the two credit cards, Ho stole a lighter, a pendant and a bracelet worth a total of $3,000 before he moved out of the Sha Tin apartment in early May. On May 14, Ms Cheung, a hotel worker, discovered the items were missing and told Ho she would tell the police unless he returned them, prosecutor Ernest Tang said. Ho met Ms Cheung on May 24 in a friend's flat in Mongkok to ask for more time. When she said she had to go after receiving a phone call from her new boyfriend, Ho punched her in the head. Ms Cheung then received a chance call from her mother, who alerted police. Ho was arrested as he left the flat later that night. Police found a 30cm beef knife in his rucksack. Ho pleaded guilty to two counts of theft, one of obtaining property by deception, one of false imprisonment, one of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and one of possessing an offensive weapon. Describing the offences as 'bizarre', Judge Barnes adjourned sentencing until October 11 for a psychological report.
