'Sorry, but' response

I read with incredulity the letter from Teresa Pang of Great Food Hall ('Misunderstanding', South China Morning Post, September 28), replying to your correspondent Ines Noe Moult ('Breastfeeding mothers need better facilities', Post, September 26).

Set to one side the fine words of regret and promises to do better and what do we find?

A 'sorry, but' response, the worst kind of apology. Sorry, but it was all a misunderstanding. Sorry, but our staff were acting in your best interests. Sorry, but other mothers have preferred to use the washrooms to breastfeed their babies.

And in exactly what circumstances does Ms Pang think that a mother will ask staff to 'intervene'? This is truly Alice in Wonderland stuff.
