Harbin Brewery Group, the mainland's oldest and fourth-largest, hopes within 18 months to boost annual production capacity by 50 per cent - to more than 1.8 million tonnes - through acquisitions and organic growth.

Chief executive Peter Lo said the expansion would boost its share in the northern mainland market to between 40 and 50 per cent, from the existing 30 per cent - making it the largest player.

In June, Harbin Brewery was listed on Hong Kong's main board.

Mr Lo said it was in talks with a handful of brewers in eastern Liaoning province on possible acquisitions.

'We are also considering if we should acquire a production base in Dalian city as part of the expansion.' he said.

Harbin Brewery's existing annual output is about 1.26 million tonnes of beer, with the bulk, nearly 1.2 million tonnes, produced in northern China.

'We may acquire breweries with a production capacity of 200,000 tonnes, and then improve their operating efficiency to boost their total capacities to 600,000 tonnes,' Mr Lo said.
