Why you can trust SCMP

Aside from designer Alan Chan Yau-kin's offensive comment, rhetorically asking 'Would you ask a gweilo to design chopsticks?' ('Purple pain', South China Morning Post, October 2), I completely agree with those who argue that the new $10 note should have been designed by a Hong Kong citizen.

I have always thought the Standard Chartered and HSBC banknotes had a regal quality. The new banknote unmistakably looks like the former Dutch guilder.

Although I would trust a non-Hong Kong person to design my chopsticks, I wish the Hong Kong government had had more pride in itself and its people to have trusted its own designers in this matter of such importance.
