Form Seven students have to think about their future carefully, but Angie Lauw Yi-wan, 18, has already made up her mind. Topping her list of careers are social work and teaching.

'I hope my work would allow for more interaction with people. Teaching is an honourable mission,' she said.

A study conducted by the Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd) earlier this year reflects her view.

The 'meaningful nature' of the teaching profession has made it a popular option among 1,238 Form Seven students from 20 secondary schools, the study said.

More than 50 per cent of students showed an interest in becoming teachers, making it the third most popular choice after business executive and government executive drawn from a list of 20 professions.

Teaching was also the third most respected occupation after doctors and fire services personnel.
