Consumer electronics manufacturer IDT International said yesterday it would expand its research and development (R&D) team by about 100 people in the fiscal year.

Group chief financial officer Alain Li said the mainboard-listed electronics company needed to expand its 400-strong R&D workforce to make advances in more sophisticated technologies such as thin-film-transistor displays.

'We are hiring these people to enhance our engineering capability in order to develop even more new products,' Mr Li said.

IDT manufactures a variety of products, including liquid crystal displays, electronic organisers, children's learning tools and cordless telephones.

The company said it made product concepts in Hong Kong, which were then manufactured in the mainland. The additional product development and manufacturing staff will be based at the company's R&D facilities in Shekou.

Mr Li said R&D expenses for the company were likely to remain at 4 to 5 per cent of total turnover because costs for the new employees were likely to be low.
