Durian Durian

Pearl, 9.30pm

Shot without a script but improvised on the set, Fruit Chan's Durian Durian was inspired by the people and objects he encountered in the Mongkok area while making his previous film, Little Cheung. In Durian Durian the story switches focus from the title character in the earlier work to his equally young friend, Ah Fan (Mak Wai-fan), an illegal immigrant from the mainland, who despite her tender years washes dishes for a small restaurant in a back alley. The money she makes is an important source of income for her family. In the long alleys buried deep inside Mongkok, Ah Fan runs into a young woman, Yin (Qin Hailu, above), a 21-year-old from northern China who uses her short stay in Hong Kong to work as a prostitute. They quickly become friends. Both are trapped, Ah Fan in the narrow alleys between the tall, peeling buildings and Yin in her tiny room in the brothel. They both work hard and they share the same goal: to make money. As soon as she has saved up enough, Yin returns to her sleepy, wintry home town. One day she is struck by an unlikely sight - a durian in the snow. To Yin's surprise the tropical fruit triggers memories of Hong Kong she has long suppressed. (2000)
