The Brothers Cruz turned it on for a once in a lifetime family occasion last night at Sha Tin, celebrating the golden wedding anniversary of their parents with three of the seven winners.
John and Celia Cruz celebrated 50 years together last Friday and were on hand at Sha Tin to see their boys lead in their treble. And they were joined by daughter Sandy, who lives in the United States and had flown in for the anniversary celebrations and stayed on to be part of the winning ceremonies last night.
'My sister hasn't been to Hong Kong in probably more than 10 years,' beamed Tony Cruz after his successful night. 'It's really nice to win with so much of the family here.'
Tony Cruz sent out a double in tandem with stable rider Felix Coetzee when Super Brose and Exciting Times took the second and fourth events, then younger brother Derek got involved as Platinum Express (Glyn Schofield) took the sixth.
Beacon Hill residents, John and Celia live quite close and it was no surprise to find John at the track. 'He was a jockey in the old amateur days and retired when racing turned professional. He comes to a lot of race meetings, but with some of our family spread all around the world, it's unusual to have so many of us here,' Tony Cruz said.
Super Brose set the ball rolling in the second when he made his first appearance on a racecourse a winning one, leading throughout to win down the straight 1,000 metres in good style and fast time.
