A lorry driver punched a masculine-looking woman to stop her going into a female toilet because his wife was inside, a court heard yesterday. Hau Siu-chor, 42, who pleaded guilty to one count of common assault, was given a two-month jail term, suspended for three years. Magistrate Ernest Lin Kam-hung heard Hau went to the Neway Karaoke Box in Yau Ma Tei on September 30 with his wife and her friends. Kowloon City Court was told Hau escorted them to the toilet and waited outside. While he was waiting, Lam Hau-yee tried to enter the washroom. Hau blocked Ms Lam's way and asked her why she was going to the female toilet. Ms Lam ignored him but Hau asked her to take off her pants so he could determine her sex, the court was told. An embarrassed Ms Lam tried to push her way into the toilet. During the struggle Hau punched her on the face. It was only when the police arrived and checked their identity cards that Hau realised Ms Lam was a woman and that he had made a big mistake. His lawyer told the court Hau was only trying to protect his wife and he was willing to compensate Ms Lam. Apart from the suspended jail term, Mr Lin fined Hau $5,000 and ordered him to pay $2,000 compensation to Ms Lam.
