Dragonair, Hong Kong's second largest airline, said yesterday its passenger traffic surged 24.23 per cent year on year last month.

The airline said it carried 304,999 passengers last month, compared with 245,494 during the same month last year.

Dragonair attributed the rise to increasing business travel to the mainland in the second half of the month.

'The first part of September is traditionally slower for passenger travel as it is when the new school term starts,' said chief executive Stanley Hui.

'However, for the rest of the month, passenger numbers were satisfactory, with business traffic being particularly robust as we head into the seasonally busy months for the mainland China market.'

In the first three quarters this year, passenger traffic on the carrier rose 16.03 per cent year on year.

Cargo traffic last month rocketed 47.56 per cent year on year to 18,328 tonnes - 5.24 per cent up on the 17,415 tonnes carried in August - which set a record for the year.

'Two consecutive record months keep us on track for our best year ever in cargo,' said Mr Hui.

'September's performance was the result of continuing strong demand in our main market of mainland China. Shipments were particularly strong in the second half of the month ahead of the National Day holidays.'

Dragonair carried 132,188 tonnes of cargo in the first three quarters - 61.95 per cent more than the same period last year.

Cathay Pacific earlier announced a 14.6 per cent year-on-year increase in passenger volume last month. Cargo volume was also up 8.9 per cent.
