One in four schools has backed a campaign to bring in a law against smoking anywhere on school grounds.
Out of 1,296 primary and secondary schools, 331 have shown support for the Committee on Youth Smoking Prevention campaign.
Committee chairman Tik Chi-yuen said: 'The positive response is beyond our expectations and shows schools really want a smoke-free environment.'
Committee project manager Li Cheong-lung said schools were last month asked to sign forms urging the government to approve amendments banning smoking in all schools.
He said the 25 per cent response rate was good, given that the schools were given just two weeks to reply.
The committee also collected 8,800 signatures from teachers and students, and at least 200 schools have hung banners reading 'We support a smoke-free campus'.
