A world-class games expo will be held in Hong Kong this Christmas, with organisers aiming to attract 100,000 visitors, including game-players, holiday shoppers, parents and the elderly.
The 2002 Asia Game Show - previously named the Interactive, Digital, Electronic Entertainment and Edu-tainment Expo Asia - will be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from December 21-26.
Organisers said the event would be modelled on the influential Tokyo Game Show, which has run in Japan for a decade.
Interactive Development managing director Sunny Liu said: 'The industry in Hong Kong is not big but the market is enormous. Hong Kong people are spending a lot of money on gaming and it is an inevitable part of life.'
According to a study done by Asia Market Intelligence in August, about 31 per cent of Hong Kong's population has a Sony PlayStation and 15 per cent Sony's PS2. About 16 per cent have Nintendo's GameCube and 9 per cent Microsoft's Xbox.
The survey found that, of 788 Hong Kong people interviewed, 49 per cent said they would spend at least HK$700 on electronic entertainment in the coming year.
By August, Sony had sold 150,000 PS2s and 700,000 PlayStations in Hong Kong.
