The latest batch of imports arriving yesterday from Britain pushed the figure for Private Purchases closer to the 50 mark for this season. The flight carried perhaps the horse most likely to realise the Jockey Club's best hopes for the current imports. Formerly with Dermot Weld but on his way to the Lawrie Fownes yard, Jazz Beat is a lightly raced son of Darshaan and established genuine Group One credentials at Chicago's Arlington racecourse in August. After dashing clear at the 300 metres in the Grade One Secretariat Stakes over 2,000 metres, Jazz Beat was nailed right on the post, but his effort could well make him the highest-rated import for the current year. Handicapper Ciaran Kennelly said no figure had yet been issued for the colt but his international rating stands at 110 or 111, depending on your source. Importantly, Jazz Beat needs firm going to show his form and seems sure to receive a Hong Kong handicap rating of at least 103, the same as other highly rated imports, River Dancer and Surveyor, and possibly even a pound more.
