Some clenched their fists, some opened their eyes wide, some giggled and some swung their arms. These were the gestures of excitement from 25 junior students who met one of their favourite authors last month.

Morris Gleitzman, an award-winning author of children's books from Australia, was in Hong Kong between September 16 and 25 on a school tour organised by Australian International School Hong Kong (AISHK). Apart from AISHK, he went to six other schools.

The visits were part of the school's effort to promote reading, said AISHK teacher librarian Dianne McKenzie.

She hoped meeting with authors would encourage students to read their work as well as other books. The students' enthusiastic response to Gleitzman proved the visit a success.

'We asked him many things about his life, the funny and sad things. We want information about an author, so we can read and understand the books better,' said Kyla Ansell, 10.

Tristan Clegg, also 10, was very excited, although he had met Gleitzman before.
