Motorists driving on the stretch of Tai Tam Road between Stanley Gap and Chai Wan roads enjoy some beautiful mountain scenery.
However, while the view might be pleasant, the driving standards of many motorists are not and they are rapidly deteriorating.
I applaud the greater frequency of speed traps being used on the road near Chai Wan. However, most of the dangerous speeding occurs between Tai Tam Reservoir and the Shek O turn-off. Double white central lines must be painted along the entire stretch of the road and automatic speed cameras should be installed at strategic points.
I am also concerned about the widespread use of fog lights by all types of vehicles on clear and dry nights. Fog lights with their wide-angle beams are designed to be used only during foggy days, or when there is heavy rain. On clear nights, these lights blind oncoming drivers and cause accidents. It is important to educate Hong Kong drivers and make it an offence to use fog lights when the weather is fine.
I used to admire Hong Kong's law-abiding drivers. But that was 10 years ago. Now I see their standards deteriorating and at the same time more people are neglecting their social responsibilities.
