GUANGDONG has vowed to increase cadres' awareness of the importance of strict implementation of Communist Party policies. The pledge was made by the provincial Government's propaganda chief at a conference on the propaganda and ideological work in the new era of reforms. According to Guangdong newspaper reports, the head of the Propaganda Department of the provincial party committee, Yu Youjun, said a fundamental task for them was to unify Deng Xiaoping's theory of socialism with Chinese characteristics. Mr Yu underscored the importance of developing new thinking and strategies to tackle new problems faced by the localities and departments. The central leadership, faced with dwindling influence in regions, has made repeated appeals for ''action in unison'' to help make central orders a success. The Guangzhou Daily said the meeting, attended by about 80 propaganda officials, was aimed at ''clarifying the thoughts'' on how to promote the ideological work. Mr Yu said cadres should emancipate their minds from the leftist thoughts and dogmatic influences of the past. New thinking for the development of a market economy should replace the set minds formulated under a planned economy, he noted. He called for bolder thoughts and new spirit. On the other hand, the authorities should continue to fight against corruption caused by money-worship, hedonism and extreme individualism.
