Army set to probe 'suicide'

THE army has launched an investigation into the apparent suicide of a retired officer whose body was found hanging in the Prince of Wales Barracks in Central.

It is understood that the man - a retired colonel - killed himself on Friday because of worsening family problems.

He had recently arrived in Hong Kong and had few close friends in the territory.

A Joint Services spokesman confirmed that a body had been found at the Prince of Wales Barracks.

''We do not consider that there were any suspicious circumstances.

''The matter is currently under military investigation,'' he said.

No other details could be given until the next-of-kin were informed, he said.

The spokesman said he was not aware of any suicides within the garrison in the past 18 months at least.

''But I am not saying this is a suicide,'' he added.
