Mainland gymnast Sang Lan, who crushed her spine in a practice accident four years ago, is planning an Olympic comeback - as a TV presenter.

The former national champion was paralysed from the waist down in an accident that shocked the sporting world at the 1998 Goodwill Games in New York.

Now 21, she has landed a job hosting a sports television show and wants to be a presenter for the 2008 Olympic Games.

Ningbo-born Ms Sang - a first-year journalism student at Peking University - has been invited to host a Star TV sports show next year.

Asked about her new role, she said: 'I like it a lot. At first I felt a bit nervous, but generally I am quite happy with my performance. Now I can analyse all the different gymnastics moves for the people watching with me.'

Ms Sang, who was in Hong Kong yesterday for a book promotion, said she saw her new TV-hosting career as the chance to fulfil her Olympics dream.

'The ultimate goal for any athlete is to become an Olympic champion. Unfortunately, I can't participate in the Games, but I hope to get involved through my work with the media,' she said.
