A new supermarket price war broke out yesterday as Wellcome and ParknShop challenged Jusco's $8.80 discount campaign.
On Wednesday Jusco announced that 200 selected items would each cost $8.80 every Wednesday until February 26 as part of its 15th anniversary celebrations. Most of the items usually start at $10.
In response, Wellcome yesterday launched its 57th anniversary sale campaign of a limited edition value bag with discount coupons and 18 products worth $150 retailing at $29.90.
Shoppers who spend more than $100 will also be entitled to a booklet containing eight offers, including buy-one-get-one-free and discounts.
ParknShop retaliated by expanding the number of $9.90 rice bowl dishes from six to 50. It also announced a donation of 6,000 rice bowl coupons to low-income earners and single-parent families.
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology economics professor Francis Lui Ting-ming said the discounts were timed for the festive period to entice people in to buy other non-discounted goods.
