Hanged colonel left notes

Mark Hughes

THE retired British army officer who was found hanged at Prince of Wales Barracks has been named as Colonel Colin Lees.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

Colonel Lees, who was 56 and came from Somerset, is understood to have left three notes: one to his wife, one to his three grown-up children and one to his headquarters. Details of their contents were not disclosed.

He was found hanging in a stairwell near the barracks chapel by a member of staff on Friday morning.

Discussions are being held with Colonel Lees' wife over whether his body will be flown back to Britain.

An inquest will be held in Britain. The Hong Kong coroner has indicated he sees no reason for an inquest in the territory because Colonel Lees was found on military property.

Colonel Lees is understood to have recently retired from the Gurkhas. It is thought he had not been in Hong Kong for long. He had been employed in the territory because of his military experience as a civil servant in an administrative role attached to the barracks.

His wife had been expected to join him shortly.
