A 10km pipeline to bring mains water to villagers in remote northeast New Territories is not intended to pave the way for development of the area, a government official insisted yesterday. The Water Supplies Department is laying pipelines across Sai Kung Country Park to Tai Long Wan, regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches in Hong Kong. The South China Morning Post reported that pressure group Friends of Tai Long Wan said the work was 'defacing paradise' and a waste of taxpayers' money. The group claimed the $30 million project would serve just 30 villagers. Senior Town Planner Lau Cheung-ching told RTHK's BackChat programme yesterday there were no plans to develop the Tai Long Wan area. 'We have not received a development proposal and the government has no plans in Tai Long Wan,' he said.
