Today is International Buy Nothing Day, the world's biggest anti-consumerist festival.
If last year is anything to go by, more than a million people in the United States will take a stand today against over-consumption and mindless shopping with events such as: credit-card burning; 'Stop Shopping' graffiti campaigns; and the creation of 'shopping free zones'.
So will the event go down in Hong Kong? We phoned some 'experts' to ask: 'Will you be observing Buy Nothing Day?'
Socialite and owner of Teresa boutique Teresa Cheung Siu-wai: 'Buy nothing? I don't like it. We are having a 90 per cent off sale today so you would be mad to miss it.' The famous spendthrift former wife of Kenny Bee, the bankrupt singer and actor, added: 'Nothing cheers you up like a bit of shopping - it's the best therapy.'
Socialite and former solicitor Kai-bong Chau (left): 'Wine tasting? What? Buy what? Nothing? Who's it by? [SAR explains the concept] Oh, I quite agree, Brenda and I used to have a house full of stuff we never wore. Now we only buy essentials - such as if we want to match a hat or something.'
Fashion guru and Metro Broadcast chief executive Kam Kwok-leung: 'That's not a good idea when the economy is sluggish. Those who can afford to spend should spend.' more to boost the economy.'
