The latest artist to beat the odds is Daniel Chan Hiu-tung (right). The singer-actor was already at a career low last year, when his manager Rebecca Leung Siu-ying committed suicide. These days, Chan is so popular he is involved with film, music and TV. But his new interests are alarming his record company, Universal Music. The company is concerned he isn't devoting enough time to promoting his music. In an odd twist of fate, it turns out Chan's main competition for some of the most coveted music awards is singer Jordon Chan Siu-chun. The pair were once rivals for the affections of singer Cecilia Cheung Pak-chee.

How does Chan feel about his born-again fame? 'I am so busy these days I can't even go on my usual yearly overseas concert tour,' the singer lamented. 'Which means a few hundred thousands less in my bank account.'
