I WAS disappointed by Teri Fitsell's analysis of The Deer Hunter (''Cimino's flawed masterpiece'', August 5). Cimino's film failed to meet her expectations on two points: the ''portrayal'' of the Vietnamese (South Vietnamese I presume?) as ''insulting'' and the ''larger questions of the United States' involvement in Vietnam''. But why stop there Teri, please go ahead and tell us, your readers, what the ''politically correct'' view is? God forbid the public should have the benefit of a variety of points of view on these controversial subjects. Indeed, JFK won big points with its unconventional view of the Kennedy assassination. Even Oliver Stone himself said of JFK, ''Even if it is not 100 per cent factual, at least it will get people thinking again.'' L. ALLEN Wan Chai
