The Mass Transit Railway Corporation is seeking to expand into the fast-growing Pearl River Delta, a senior official said yesterday.
Operating director Philip Gaffney told the South China Morning Post that the corporation was seeking to use its rail networks in the western part of Hong Kong - the Airport Express line and the planned Penny's Bay link to Disneyland.
'We have significant investments in the Airport Express line and the rail link to Disneyland, and we will maximise and utilise those assets,' Mr Gaffney said.
'With the rail development in the west [of Hong Kong] such as the West Rail of the KCRC, there should be some links to the Pearl River Delta,' he said.
Mr Gaffney did not specify where and what rail links should be built between Hong Kong and the delta.
However, MTRC chairman Jack So Chak-kwong said recently that the corporation was interested in a possible rail link on the proposed Hong Kong-Macau-Zhuhai bridge and a planned rail corridor, to be called the Chek Lap Kok link, connecting the West Rail's Tuen Mun terminus and Chek Lap Kok airport.
Financial analysts said the planned rail links would substantially reverse the fortunes of the Airport Express line, which has suffered losses as a result of lower than expected use.
