She's known as San San, Lee Lai-shan or even Queen of the Waves. Just don't call Hong Kong's windsurfing champion 'Doctor'. The 1996 Olympic gold medallist yesterday became the first Hong Kong athlete to be awarded an honorary doctorate when she was made a Doctor of Social Science by the Chinese University of Hong Kong. 'I hope people will keep calling me San San,' she said. 'I feel more comfortable with that - it suits me more.' Sam Wong Tak-sum, San San's husband, quipped: 'I hope I can still call her lo por [wife], and not Dr Lee!' San San, 32, was overwhelmed by the award. 'It's the greatest honour I've been awarded outside of sport,' she said. But it was an occasion tinged with sadness. San San was only able to attend yesterday's ceremony because she had pulled out of the World Championships in Thailand this Sunday after suffering a recurrence of the abdominal problems that have dogged her career. 'My feelings are mixed,' she admitted.
