Cap Juluca

Where? On Anguilla, a tiny island in the West Indies, encircled by a coral reef.

Sounds idyllic. Set among fragrant gardens blooming with bougainvillea, frangipani, jasmine and orchids, Cap Juluca's Moorish design incorporates a sun-bleached series of domes, turrets and parapets.

Romantic, then? If you choose a sprawling pool villa, you and your loved one can step straight on to the cashmere-soft sand of Maundays Bay. Suites are also located on the beach and come with private terraces, while the 58 remaining rooms have blue sea and sky views.

Who goes there? Charlie Sheen, Denise Richards, Courtney Cox, Mel Gibson, P Diddy, Jennifer Lopez, Naomi Campbell, Drew Barrymore and Janet Jackson.

Sunbathing and star-spotting go hand-in-hand? Anguilla is a haven for Hollywood's big names. This Christmas, keep your eyes peeled for Liam Neeson, Natasha Richardson, Kevin Bacon, Kevin Spacey and Robin Williams, who have all booked holidays there.

Is the decor as glitzy as the clientele? Although guestrooms are expensively kitted out - showcasing a richly textured combination of leather, stoneware and Brazilian walnut wood - the look is stealth-wealth rather than jet-set.

And the bathrooms? Sublime. Clad in Italian marble and perfumed with Bulgari toiletries, some have a double tub and private solarium. Better still, a maid ensures your bathrobe is warmed, your bath is run and scented candles are lit.

Clearly, the service is first rate. On the beach, raise your flag and a barman arrives; mid-afternoon ice cream and sorbet are served.

Talking of food . . . There are three restaurants to choose from, and guests can pretty much dictate the menu - from char-grilled tuna to bacon and eggs.

And there must be a spa. The resort's mind and body centre offers a plethora of massage treatments - together with astrology readings, personal training and daily yoga classes.

Not to mention a wide range of watersports? Diving, windsurfing and waterskiing are a given, while guests who want to exercise their credit cards can visit neighbouring islands - St Barts, St Kitts and St Martin - for a spot of retail therapy.
