For those on the horns of a dilemma over what to buy their beloved this Christmas, a Hong Kong company has come up with a novel suggestion - genuine Finnish reindeer DNA. It is different, it is interesting, and it is highly unlikely that whoever you give it to will already have it, according to DNA Tech Ltd, which is selling the DNA in a pendant, complete with silver antlers, for $480. The firm's project manager, Richard Collins, admits that by itself, crystallised and preserved reindeer DNA looks like an unimpressive 'purple round blob'. However he is quick to add that it comes floating in a limited-edition vial of 'luxurious' purple liquid - signifying friendship, peace, royalty and forgiveness - along with a silver necklace. Dr Collins, a biochemist, said: 'In heraldry, antlers signify strength and fortitude and in dream interpretations they signify future happiness. 'With reindeer, it's a nice link to Christmas . . . this is evidence of reindeers. 'Theoretically you could use the DNA in the necklace to clone your own reindeer. The DNA in the necklace contains the complete genetic code of the reindeer.' The DNA was extracted from blood taken by the Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute from three adult females and one adult male deer. Asked if the DNA gifts debase the science which makes their creation possible, Dr Collins said he believed they made a welcome counterpoint to the unpleasant press DNA samples got when they were used to identify bodies in disasters. DNA-Tech's other products since it opened in 1999 have included a service to turn your own DNA into a similar pendant, or print it on a T-shirt. The company can also preserve DNA from your pets - dead or alive - into pendants or other memorials.
