In her clutches I love handbags. A few years ago I bought a flea-market clutch in snakeskin and have used and abused it. I'd like to spoil myself for Christmas and get a luxury clutch. Any recommendations? Bag Lady, Central The Dictator rules: Snakeskin, my dear, has had its day. Conservationist readers, or indeed those with consciences, should look away now, but for exquisite bags, consider Bottega Veneta's crocodile-skin envelope clutch in black or red ($35,800 from Shop B19, The Peninsula, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 2739-6865). At Prada (Shop 111, Lee Gardens Plaza, Causeway Bay, tel: 2907-3525), the crocodile-stamp leather clutch has almost the same appearance but comes at about a tenth of the price ($3,850). More casual than the Bottega Veneta version, it has a zip along the top, the classic Prada triangle on the front and comes in dark pink only. Or you can pick up one of its elegant silk clutches in black or purple ($3,550). For something unusual, go to Giorgio Armani (G/F, Chater House, Central, tel: 2530-1998), where you'll find a gorgeous black and beige bag that looks at once modern and retro. With shoulder straps that can be hidden inside to make a clutch, it is made from Bakelite-like hard plastic with a cut-out lace pattern on the front ($6,500). Velvet goldmine I still regret not buying a velvet Ralph Lauren suit a few years ago. I really want one for winter, do you know where I can find one? Slow On The Draw, Sai Kung The Dictator: Normally, I'd say don't worry because you'd look outdated in fashion that is not yet vintage, but in this case I have to say you really missed out. With its beautiful cut and great colour, this suit is a classic. You could try Cerruti's sumptuous navy blazer ($4,200) with matching trousers ($2,100), however. Or its longer jacket ($3,900) and trousers ($2,100) in a charcoal velvet. The dependable Max Azria has added a velvet blazer ($2,350) and pants ($1,950) to his BCBG line in black or champagne. Find both brands at Lane Crawford (Ocean Terminal, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 2118-3428). For a casual and sexy look, try Tommy Hilfiger's velvet suits (Shop 90, Basement, The Landmark, Central, tel: 2525-8848). There's no question you'll love his red velvet jackets ($590) and pants ($550), but they're so popular you'd better pray they still have your size. Goldfinger I saw a gold sequined tank top in a magazine I've now lost. I can't afford a huge holiday wardrobe, but I'd like one special top to mix and match with things I already have. Where can I find one? Pearly Queen, Causeway Bay The Dictator: Forget it. You're probably talking about the shimmering gold show-stopper at Marc Jacobs (Shop 206, Pacific Place, 88 Queensway, Admiralty, tel: 2523-3324). The gorgeous, textured mixture of shiny and matte sequins, softened by soft mesh edges, will make you look like a million bucks and cost quite close to it (okay, $9,895 to $11,995), but that adds up to several seasons of new Jimmy Choo shoes. If you're looking for sequins, visit Pyon Fashion (stall 66, Li Yuen Street East, Central, tel: 2523-3599) and make an appointment to visit the company showroom round the corner on Des Voeux Road. Pyon manufactures pretty crochet and sequin tops ($100 to $200), skirts ($200) and dresses ($380 to $560), and can take custom orders. Or get right down and showgirl-dirty with sequined, butterfly bikini tops ($98) at stall 47. For a selection of sequined tank-tops in various styles and colours ($850 to $2,250), shimmy your way over to Sparkle Fashion (Shop 702B, 7/F, Pedder Building, 12 Pedder Street, Central, tel: 2524-9133). Leave the Thai silk pants in the closet and try mixing your sparkles with sturdy fabrics, such as flannel trousers or jeans. Get your kit off I know this isn't up your alley, but my friends are mad about football. I'd like to give them official club and international shirts for Christmas. Please help. Off The Ball, Choi Hung The Dictator: Not up my alley at all. Not even on the map. Even ten-pin bowling holds more interest for me: at least you get to wear cute shoes. For a limited kit selection, try the shops of sponsoring sports companies. Nike (Shop A, UG/F, Century Square, 1 D'Aguilar Street, Central, tel: 2526-7620) carries Arsenal, Barcelona, Manchester United, Portugal, Brazil, South Korea, USA and Netherlands shirts; Adidas (G/F, 60A, Russell Street, Causeway Bay, tel: 2882-3311) can help with the likes of AC Milan, Real Madrid, Ajax, Bayern Munich, France and Germany. However, and don't ask how I know this, the football-kit goldmine is Mongkok. Near what used to be a strip of sports outfitters, Hing-F Sports (G/F, 12 Nelson Street, Mongkok, tel: 2300-1155) stands out as one of the few, and certainly one of the best, specialists. Replicas from its endless selection of shirts from the top teams and countries sell for $99 to $539. Shorts sell for $79 to $279, and each item may be person-alised with iron-on badges ($35 up). Hing-F also carries away strips. Wear them on the pitch, while watching matches at home ... but please don't wear them out.
