The holder of TVB's Most Popular TV Actor Award was arrested for alleged drink-driving after a traffic accident in Choi Hung yesterday - on the eve of his 40th birthday today.

Gallen Lo Ka-leung, who has played flawed but ultimately good characters in a series of television dramas, was driving to Sai Kung along Clear Water Bay Road when he apparently lost control at the junction with Fei Ngo Shan Road just before 5am, police said.

Lo's car crossed the road and hit a car and a taxi coming from the opposite direction.

The drivers of both vehicles were taken to United Christian Hospital, where the car driver, 65, remained stable. The taxi driver, 46, was treated and discharged.

Lo allegedly left the scene and police later found him at his Sai Kung home. The actor complained of feeling unwell and was taken to hospital for a check-up.

He was arrested after allegedly being found over the drink-drive limit. Lo was released on $5,000 bail and told to report back to police on January 15.

An external affairs spokesman for TVB, which is also Lo's agent, said: 'Although the incident happened during his private time, we will discuss the matter with the artist section to determine what type of assistance we can offer him.'

Lo began his showbiz career as one of the finalists in the New Talents Singing Contest, organised by TVB in the early 1980s.

He had a short stint at ATV before joining TVB and worked for years in minor roles before making his big break with the portrayal of ruthless villain Tsui Kar-lap in Cold Blood, Warm Heart  in 1995.

Recently, Lo won TVB's Most Popular TV Actor Award, his third in five years.

He is the second actor to be arrested for alleged drink-driving in the past month.

Film star Tony Leung Ka-fai, 45, was arrested on November 9 after his car was involved in a three-vehicle crash on the Hunghom side of the Cross-Harbour Tunnel. He was also alleged to have punched a bus driver.
