In a reversal of roles, students from a Yuen Long school became the selectors and picked the team of teachers they were to play in a charity football match. Shung Tak Catholic English College students paid to cast votes to nominate which teachers they wanted to be teamed up against last week. Unfortunately, they apparently picked the wrong players - the teachers won 13-12. The match may have been an innovative way of boosting the charity coffers, but it was not the school's only fund-raising event last week. Everyone at the school, from the principal to a German exchange student, was involved in charity activities, including games booths and food stalls. A team of exchange students from different schools in Hong Kong raised money by making and selling German snacks. The school's principal immersed himself in the school's two days of fund-raising activities, including helping to clean up the mess afterwards. The school is confident of coming up with at least $25,000 for Operation Santa Claus, organised by the South China Morning Post and RTHK. This year's beneficiary is the Pathways Foundation, which helps children with specific learning disabilities. This is the seventh year that the Yuen Long college has supported the charity event. The school will cap its fund-raising activities with a singing performance by teachers tomorrow. Students will again pay to cast votes to nominate which teachers will sing which pop songs. Brenda Lee, in charge of the activities, said: 'Some teachers are trying to buy their way out of it, but they won't succeed.' Special thanks to Yang Siu-shun and Asha Sabnani for their generous donation. Donations can be made by contacting the Operation Santa Claus office on 2251 1550 or sending a cheque payable to Operation Santa Claus 2002, Bank of China Tower, Level 25, 1 Garden Road, Central, Hong Kong.
