A Chinese University probe into alleged sexual harassment at a student orientation camp found that participants were chanting obscene slogans which were 'absolutely unacceptable', but failed to impose any penalty.

The investigation team issued instead a strongly worded reprimand to the organising committees of the university's four colleges.

In August, the colleges jointly organised the camp, where students traditionally trade banter.

The investigation found that some activities at the orientation camp were 'clearly sexually hostile', and unacceptable. It also noted some students were extremely insensitive to the problem of sexual harassment.

They made fun of the figures of women students and put up posters loaded with sexual meaning.

Defending the university's decision not to impose any penalties, the Dean of Students, Professor Jack Cheng Chun-yiu, said: 'We cannot simply choose a few students and impose heavy punishments because of this incident. This does not match the belief of the university.'
