LAST night's spectacular meteor shower over the territory could bear an ominous message for Hong Kong and neighbouring areas.

The space debris which was visible, cloud cover permitting, over Hong Kong between 1 am and 4 am this morning, could herald upheavals on a more terrestrial level, according to fung shui practitioners.

''Unstable political changes would stir up Hong Kong and cause damage, including a stock market plunge,'' Chung Ying-tong said.

He said that could happen in the lunar months of July and August - late August to October in the western calendar.

The astronomical phenomenon - with debris left by a passing comet appearing to rain down on the Earth as it passed through - may last until tomorrow.

Mr Chung said: ''Not only would Hong Kong suffer substantial losses, but mainland China would also run into trouble.

''The months [ahead] will be critical to some top leaders in China. Many of them would have health problems,'' Mr Chung said. He added that paramount leader Deng Xiaoping would be on the list.
