Bill Gates (above), chairman and chief software architect of the Microsoft Corporation, comes under the spotlight. While at Harvard University in the early 1970s, Gates developed the programming language BASIC for the first microcomputer - the MITS Altair. Gates dropped out of Harvard to devote his energies to Microsoft, a company he started in 1975 with his childhood friend Paul Allen. Guided by a belief that the personal computer would be a valuable tool on every desktop in every home, Gates' foresight and his vision for personal computing have been central to the success of Microsoft and the software industry.
